Day Walk – Arundel, Tortington Common, BinsteadSaturday 5th July 2025Ancient woodland and riverside walk. Meet at 9.30 for a 9.45 set off. Meeting in Arundel at the Mill Road car park (if you're early enough there may be free parking along Mill Rd itself, alternative parking at the Lido car park; there is a medieval fayre at the Castle, so parking could be problematic. If coming by train, it's just over half a mile to stroll from the station). This varied walk will be pretty flat. It's around 10 miles and the plan is to walk through the town and down to the start of the shady woodland, following footpaths and bridleways through this ancient wood. We will then track through fields with views back to the Castle and Cathedral, crossing the railway line a couple of times and find our way to the riverside, where we can picnic for lunch, or possibly adjourn to the Ship and Anchor pub! We then follow the river back into Arundel, returning along the lower streets to our start point. The walk has a few overgrown paths so I recommend long trousers. It took around 3.5 hours of walking (not including breaks) when I did the recce, so with the earlier start you may want to stay on afterwards and visit the Castle, Wildfowl Trust or Swanbourne Lake. |

Day Walk – Nutley and Ashdown ForestSunday 24th August 2025An opportunity to explore the northeast of our club region with a walk in the Ashdown Forest, located between Uckfield, Tunbridge Wells and East Grinstead. The walk will roughly follow the route of Southern Comfort in Trail Magazine, though I will tweak it a little and I have certainly tweaked the start and end points as the parking in Nutley is not so great. https://explore.osmaps.com/route/515106/Trail-Magazine-Southern-comfort Following inspiration from some of the clumps earlier in the year we will meet in the large car park at Friend's Clump. Advance warning - there is a parking charge for the day though this does go to the forest maintenance. Meet at 09.30 for a 09.45 departure. The car park is large but you may wish to car share as this is a little way from the south coast. The walk could be up to 13 miles with approximately 1725 feet of ascent and great views. I may cut this down a little but it will likely take six hours with coffee and picnic lunch. This circuit combines woodland, ponds, streams and heathland with fine views. A World War Two memorial and an old windmill, reputed to have once stood at Crowborough or Goudhurst, or possibly both, add to the interest. Please let the organiser know if you wish to join us and if you need help co-ordinating lift sharing. |
Day Walk – Devilʼs DykeSunday 7th September 2025Meet at the Devilʼs Dyke car park for a 10.30 start. We will walk from Devilʼs Dyke towards Newtimber Hill, through Pyecombe over to Wolstonbury Hill then back round Pyecombe heading towards Varncombe Hill where we will join the Monarchs Way for a while before heading back up to Devils Dyke. Total distance is 10.5 miles with 1905ft of ascent. Please remember your packed lunch. For those travelling by public transport the number 77 bus runs from Brighton. It may also be possible to do car shares - please let the organiser know if you are willing to offer or if you would like to have a lift. |
